Human-Centred Design Fundamentals is a one-day, practical introduction to human-centred design (HCD) that you can immediately use in your work, whether in policy, operations, or services.
Across this immersive day, you will be guided by expert public sector design practitioners through the values, principles, tools, and approaches of human-centered design. You will work on an applied project, seeing how design helps you understand challenges differently and develop solutions that work in practice.
The session balances active doing with clear explanation. You will try out tools and approaches yourself, see how they connect to government’s Design Principles, and leave with methods you can apply directly to your role the next day.
Why this is important now?
Human-centred design is increasingly recognised as a core capability for public servants. Globally, governments are using these approaches to improve how they understand challenges, develop ideas, and deliver solutions that respond to real needs.
In Ireland, Cabinet has approved Design Principles for Government, and the Better Public Services strategy highlights design as a key enabler. OECD recommendations also point to the importance of human-centred public administration. This course brings those shifts into a practical, hands-on learning experience.
Who is this course for?
Human-Centred Design Fundamentals is for civil and public servants in policy, operations, services, or innovation roles who are curious about design, want to find better ways of working, and are looking for immediately useful tools and approaches to make their work more action-oriented and effective.
