Overview

This diploma explores key areas in modern management theory and practice. The course will provide newly appointed managers, the self-employed and those interested in enhancing personal performance with the key skills and knowledge required of a today’s professional manager. Students will be introduced to the principles of management, human resource management, organisational communications and finance, and acquire foundational skills in key information technology applications that are used in the contemporary work environment.

 

Programme Aims and Objectives

Aims:

The Diploma in Management Studies aims to provide students with key skills and knowledge required of a modern professional manager.

Objectives:

  • Equip learners with competencies across a range of key business functions.
  • Enable learners to develop foundational skills for human resource management.
  • Apply tools and techniques for effective organisational communications.
  • Appraise the significance of financial management to effective business operations.
  • Advance ability in the use of current office software applications.

 

Assessment

To meet the requirements of the Diploma in Management Studies, students will be required to complete the following assessments:

  • Principles of Management: group presentation (100%)
  • Information Technology Applications: lab project (100%)
  • Human Resource Management: individual written assignment (100%)
  • Contemporary Management Practice: individual written assignment (100%)
  • Organisational Communications: group assignment and presentation (100%)
  • Financial Management Principles: weekly assignments (30%) and final exam (70%)

 

Course Content

  • Principles of Management: The Principles of Management module aims to provide students with an introduction to the complexities of modern management. This module explores key areas in modern management and allows students to develop an understanding of the management environment and organisational structure and culture.
  • Information Technology Applications: This module will equip learners with practical digital skills. Learners will gain an understanding of key technologies in the workplace. Learners will build practical skills in databases, spreadsheets and data analysis and presentation. Learners will also contextualise the role that computer technologies have played in facilitating the evolution and development of business systems, and the legal and ethical issues that have emerged through this process.
  • Human Resource Management: This module will provide the student an insight into HRM and the role HRM plays in an organisation. This module will appeal to someone new to leadership or to build on existing knowledge and skills and learn how to coach and mentor staff. The module presents current trends in the field and provides the students with the foundational tools for Human Resource Management.
  • Contemporary Management Practice: The Strategic Principles of Management module aims to provide students with both academic knowledge and practical management skills. This module explores key areas in modern management and allows students to develop key competencies required of a modern professional manager.
  • Organisational Communications: This module aims at providing students with the skills and techniques to communicate effectively. It introduces communication strategies for specific contexts, focusing on the use of different styles depending on the medium and the public. It is a highly practical module that provides the learners with both oral and written communication skills relevant in any type of business.
  • Financial Management principles: Through this module student will learn the basic financial and management principles in use in the modern organisation and understand the construction and use of both financial and management accounting techniques adopted.

 

Structure

This programme is divided into five modules. In order to be awarded the Diploma in Management Studies, students must attend and pass all five modules.

Students will attend class for one evening per week over two semesters, or for a 17 week period during the intensive course held in the spring intake. To be awarded the Diploma in Management Studies, students will be required to complete 100% written assignment at the end of each module.

 

Career opportunities

On completion of the programme students will have the knowledge and skills required to work in a variety of business and management roles. The diversity of the programme can also enhance the career profile of non-business candidates. This programme can also be beneficial for small business owners to gain an understanding of the importance of marketing, financial and human resource strategies for organisations

 

Fees

The fee for this Diploma is €2,000. This is inclusive of tuition, registration, exam fees and DBS library membership.
