Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD, has secured Government approval to launch a new programme aimed at attracting top global research talent to Ireland. The initiative, developed in partnership with Research Ireland, will focus on drawing early-career researchers and established academics to Irish institutions, supporting national economic and societal priorities.

This strategic move delivers on commitments outlined in the Programme for Government and positions Ireland to take advantage of global shifts in science and innovation. The initiative will prioritise key thematic areas including energy security, healthcare, life sciences, digital technologies and AI, food security, cybersecurity, semiconductors, and quantum technologies.

Speaking about the announcement, Minister Lawless highlighted the vital role of higher education and research in Ireland’s future:

“Higher education and research are key economic enablers. The establishment of my Department and its role in fostering innovation, supporting higher education, and promoting research are all critical components in sustaining, strengthening and future-proofing Ireland’s economy.”

He emphasised that this programme not only enhances the nation’s global research standing but also builds a knowledge-driven economy by attracting world-class talent:

“Irish research centres and talent are essential in driving forward innovation and cultivating the next generation of talent. I am steadfast in supporting the research sector’s development. The investment required to attract established researchers as well as rising stars to Ireland will not only facilitate the projects they’re investigating, it will also add to the knowledge and skills base within Irish Higher Education Institutions.”
