The new Business Energy Upgrades Scheme  initiative is designed to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Ireland lower their energy costs and reduce carbon emissions through targeted building upgrades.

The scheme significantly expands on existing supports such as the Support Scheme for Energy Audits (SSEA) and the Non-Domestic Microgeneration Grant, offering a wider range of Rapid Approval Grants. These grants enable SMEs to implement vital energy-saving and emissions-reducing measures quickly and efficiently.

Eligible upgrades under the scheme include the installation of solar PV and solar thermal systems, high-efficiency pumps, automatic controls, air handling units, heat pumps, and fabric improvements. The scheme also provides funding to optimise existing building management systems and supports detailed retrofit design planning.

Crucially, the scheme includes support for a high-quality energy audit, ensuring businesses can identify the most impactful measures for their specific premises. All businesses and public bodies that own or occupy a building are eligible to apply, making this a comprehensive national initiative.

Minister for Climate, Environment and Energy Darragh O'Brien  highlighted the long-term benefits of the programme, stating that it "will not only help SMEs manage their energy expenses but also contribute to national climate targets, enhance workplace comfort, and strengthen the sustainability credentials of Irish businesses."

In addition to this new scheme, the government – through the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) – continues to support larger and more complex energy projects through the Support Scheme for Renewable Heat (SSRH) and the EXEED Grant Scheme, particularly for biomass heating and tailored retrofit solutions.

With Ireland’s Climate Action Plan aiming for ambitious emissions reductions across all sectors, the Business Energy Upgrades Scheme represents a significant step forward in helping the SME sector play its part in a greener, more energy-efficient future.
