Report: Innovation could create up to 215,000 jobs

A new report has told the Government that up to 215,000 jobs could be created in the next decade by the country becoming an innovation leader.

Established as part of the Smart Economy plans, the Innovation Taskforce said Ireland has the capability to be a global innovation hub.

But the taskforce warns that a national effort and change of attitude is required to deliver the iniative, with spending having to be prioritised on innovation.

Launching the report, Taoiseach Brian Cowen said it offers the country hope for the future.

"It won't happen overnight," Mr Cowen said.

"It will require a reprioritisation of resources at a difficult time. We will need to adapt a strategy, and respond to new challenges as we proceed.

"But above all it requires the different elements of the public and private sectors to work together effectively.

"It can be done, and the Government is determined that we proceed with confidence," the Taoiseach said.
